Question by jrrose: Are worship and prayer the same as hypnosis?
Worship and Prayer most often involve shutting one’s eyes, staying still, listening to something repetitive (such as music or chanting) and blocking out the world around you.

Could this actually be hypnosis?

worship and praying are not as you describe

The fact that a believer is happier than a skeptic is no more to the point than the fact that a drunken man is happier than a sober one

The super-and subliminal messages are possibly a type of hypnosis, but the physicality of prayer is probably closer to meditation.

  4. Seeker Person says:

Worship is a higher degree of love and respect and honor. Prayer is talking, conversations, pleading. The shutting of eyes and blocking the rest of the world is like concentrating on good music. You wish to be alone with the music to experience it. There is prayer that fits being alone and experiencing God. There is prayer that is fully immersed in the world. Both.

The example of Jesus praying in the Garden before his arrest is about as far from hypnosis as any prayer can be. Music as prayer can be hypnotic, but it is just one kind of prayer, not the totality of it.
