Question by Ghoul: How can I find a psychiatrist that gives pills not one that wants to talk about my feelings?
As a kid I took Ritalin and a couple other things because I have really bad ADD, hyper, and some other things. I stopped taking it when I graduated from high school six years ago. I am going to start college this fall and want to get back on some pills that will help me focus on things. How can I find a doctor that can rediagnose me (I have no paper work) and prescribe me what I need? I tried some random shrink I found in the phone book and after I told him what I wanted he went on about my emotional side and how he does hypnosis and other whacko bullshit. I don’t need to express my emotions or anything. I already have friends I can talk to and I know exactly who I am. I just need to be able to focus.

I would suggest calling a few other psychiatrists’ offices so that you can pick one that does not use hypnosis, etc. Keep in mind, though, that any reputable psychiatrist will not prescribe medications without an initial consultation with you about your actions, emotions, etc.

I would not suggest going to a psychiatrist that is not interested in your feelings, but sometimes it is hard to find one who really is interested. I’d call a few more psychiatrists and ask about their practice and what they do. It shouldn’t be incredibly difficult to find a psychiatrist that doesn’t believe in hypnosis.
