Question by donnamz812: Can you cure a drug addiction with hypnosis?
A friend of mine that I care about very much is addicted to cocaine. She tried rehab once and it didn’t work, plus she doesn’t believe in the 12 steps model. Do you think hypnosis would work? I truly believe she wants to change, she just can’t “just say no” sometimes. Is there any help for a person like this?

if she truly wants to give up her addiction she shouldn’t have trouble saying no and rehab should have worked, don’t get me wrong addiction is very powerful and maybe she just doesn’t have the willpower or maybe she doesn’t want to change her ways.
i do believe hypnosis can help greatly with addiction, im sure if she goes to her doctor they will be able to help.
unfortunately i don’t think its available on the NHS (if your in uk)

12step rehabs, treatment, and programs have lousy success rates. They often makes things worse if a person internalizes the ideas that they have a lifelong disease and that they are powerless over their addictions.

The key to quitting addictions is motivation and determination.

Here is a list of several alcohol treatment methods ranked by effectiveness (except for the medications, treatment is pretty much the same for drugs or alcohol):

You’ll notice that 12step facilitation and AA are near the bottom. Hypnosis was rated 31.

I don’t think hypnosis will work in curing her addiction. This is something she needs to face head on and deal with. I was just like her and it took me several rehabs before I finally actually gave it a shot. Going to the rehab and doing all the things they say doesn’t cure you, you have to be willing to actually give yourself to the program and not expect a quick fix. The reason she doesn’t believe in the 12-step program or that rehab will work, is because she isn’t really ready to give up cocaine. Once she has hit HER rock bottom, she will be so desperate to escape the misery of addiction that she will be willing to do whatever to get better. Remember this is HER having to hit HER rock bottom. Just because you are looking at her life and how messed up it is and watching her do this to herself is extremely painful for you, none of that matters because she is the one who needs to be feeling these things. As much as it sucks that you are powerless and can’t do anything to help her, you are just going to have to wait until she is ready to get better. If you have to distance yourself from her because you can’t watch her destroy her life, then that’s what you have to do. And who knows maybe her losing all the people close to her will be one of the things that makes her hit rock bottom. Good luck!

    Hi Donna

I’ve treated cocaine addicts successfully using hypnosis.

I remember one guy who couldn’t stop fidgeting around on the sofa while I took the case history. Not surprising, really. It was a Monday afternoon and he’d had £350 worth of gear up his nose over the weekend.

At the end of the session when I woke him up, he said to me, “Is it my imagination or have I not moved for the last fifteen minutes?”

    “It’s true,” I said. “You haven’t.”

“I’m not even this still when I’m asleep,” he said.

“Why did you ask about 15 minutes?” I queried.

“Because that’s about how long I’ve been here.”

“No,” I said. “You’ve been there and still like that for an hour and five minutes.”

He looked at his watch, and said “Sheet!” (Or something like that.)

As with all hypnotherapy, for it to be effective it requires a good hypnotist and a good hypnotee. I hope your friend finds the former and is the latter.

    Best wishes

12 steps are cult nonsense. That link raysny gave is great! I bookmarked it. I am sure you can find something there that will work for your friend.
