Question by sista-soul: How can I get rid of my gag reflex due to anxiety?
I suffer from anxiety disorder and one of the reasons I don’t like to go out to restaurants or parties is because I get the horrible gag reflex I can’t control due to my nervousness and I feel like Im going to vomit in front of everyone. Do you think hypnosis would help?

Yes, it most likely would but so would the regular usage of relaxation tapes, or doing progressive relaxation or meditation on a daily basis. I’ve had this problem too. Its a sign that you need to start taking better care of your mental health.

Friend – I am not much of a believer in hypnosis, but I have seen others helped with anxiety by it.

Your problem is one of the less common of the anxiety symptoms people like us go through. I experience it myself though not at restaurants, at “gorey things” I see and smell.

I often keep dramamine with me as it does help a little, but I also have to take medication (I have other symptoms as well and have had for 22 years). I have heard there is some kind of medicine or spray that helps relieve the gag response itself, but I have not researched it.

If you have not yet, try to buy a copy of Dr. Edmund Bourne’s Anxiety and Phobia Workbook. It is so good. Maybe learning some of the relaxation techniques (including SELF- hypnosis) might be an answer.

Good luck to you and GBY.
