Question by rhapsody11: How did Freud put his patients under hypnosis?
Did he use swing a watch/pendulum in front of the patient or something? I know that Freud is well known for bringing the unconsciousness to the conscious state in his patients by using “free association” or “dream interpretation”. But how did he put his patients under hypnosis? Any ideas for what his hypnosis methods were?

Actually, I read somewhere that Freud was seriously deficient in using hypnosis in his practice.

Although he recognized it’s uses, he was never good enough with it to use it well. But he used it in a way with his patient on a couch and doing free association.

I’ll try to find that statement…. It was either in “Monsters and Magical Sticks: Or, There’s No Such Thing As Hypnosis ?” by Steven Heller or another book on hypnosis I’ve been reading on.

However, a man more known for utilizing hypnosis is Milton Erickson. He may be a better doctor to research about this.

By the way…. No one really uses the old swinging watch anymore (if they every really did in the past).

Hope that helps. Be well.

  1. Where is my mind says:

I always thought he was an authoritative hypnotist, rather than inference, he would be direct with gentle command rather than suggestion.

Suggestive hypnosis was in development but not widely known at the time.
