Question by Britney: How does hypnosis work ?
So, today I went to my psychologist, i’m going to therapy for low-self esteem, shyness, anger issues ect. So, he said that next session we’re gonna start doing hypnosis. He said i’m gonna lay in bed, he’s gonna talk “pictorial” language or something like that and I’m not allowed to listen. Like i have to think about something to keep my mind busy so i won’t listen. That’s not hard to me seeing that i get distracted VERY easily, someone might be talking to me and i might not even be listening ’cause i’m too busy thinking.

He said when someone’s hypnotized they might be standing in the sun but if the hypnotist tells them to feel cold they’ll start feeling cold even though they’re standing in the sun!

So I was wondering, will that do any harm to me ? I’m kinda scared. How does it work ?

Hypnosis only works on people who are easy to manipulate compared to others(no offense).
It is basically removing your thoughts from what they are saying and going straight to the information.
it is just a form of manipulation making you think it was your idea to do something.

There are a few problems with hypnosis
1 if you are told to do something whilst hypnotized that you would never do, you will immediately wake.
in other word they cannot force you to do something.

2 It is almost impossible for something to go wrong unless you have suppressed memories: eg your family was murdered in front of you and you have no conscious memory of this but whilst hypnotized they stumble on the memory.
but this is uber rare.

3 some people cannot just “be” hypnotized in one go, for example hypnotizing can take up to two hours for it to work and some people (like me) have a very controlled mind and as a result even when willingly being hypnotized , do not get hypnotized.

4 Being hypnotized is likened to being in a dream, your conscious and know what is going on, but have no control over what is happening (excluding things that you would never do/want to do)
it is a very relaxing experience and can almost be like a dream.

he is doing the same as your hypnotist will be doing, manipulating your mind to fix whatever is the issue.
For example him telling you not to listen likely is reverse psychology, he wants you to try so hard to distract yourself, you do not realize he is putting you into the trance so just loosing interest may result in it not working.
