  1. James says:

This is because it is generally thought that it takes 21 days to form a new habit.

I can not find any studies that show that this is the truth, but it might come from a plastic surgeon Dr. Maxwell Maltz, who wrote a bestselling book called Psycho-Cybernetics. He noticed that it took around 21 days for amputees to cease feeling phantom sensations in their amputated limbs, and from futher observations found it took 21 days to create a new habit. Since then “21 Day Habit Therapy” has become popular.

A person who reviewed the book on Amazon.com wrote:

“Particularly enlightening – and applicable to so many vital
situations in life – is Maltz’ identification of the ‘21 day’
phenomenon: the fact that the human mind takes almost exactly
21 days to adjust to a major life change, universally – whether
it’s a negative like a loss of a limb or a loved one, a change
of employment or residence, or positive like entering into a
    new romantic relationship.”

Numerous studies have shown that a habit is ingrained in your subconscious mind after 21 days of repetition. You can actually take this and apply it to any thing you want. Take working out for example. If you would like to make a morning jog I habit, simply jog every morning for 21 days. After 21 days it is almost as if you are compelled to go jogging.
