Question by j o: Why is Chris Hughes hypnosis webcast only for over 18’s? Is it dangerous to participate under 18 years old?
I’m 16 and I’m interested in participating for the experience. Is there a genuine health concern as to under 18’s participating? Or is it just to relinquish legal responsibility? If anybody has any articles on hypnosis for under 18’s and it’s dangers that might be useful too.

Thanks.
I’m not supersticious and I usually don’t believe in this sort of thing, but it’s worth a try for the experience :p

Not dangerous, just part of the hype. Making it “off limits” makes it even more appealing. Don’t be fooled; Hypnosis of this sort is just a carny act, dressed up a little. One cannot be made to do what they wouldn’t do naturally.

I would not call it “dangerous”. When I was about fourteen, I was hypnotized. (I am sixteen now) I do not feel that a sixteen year old is more liable than a twenty year old. However, that is just my opinion.

Have fun if you are able to participate!

There are no health issues with hypnosis. The age limit is either due to content on his site or some kind of liability issue.

If you want to find out about hypnosis, and learn how to hypnotize yourself and others, there are a couple of links below that you may find interesting. Some of the articles will definately help with your concerns and learning the mechanics of hypnosis should help to put your mind at rest as once you understand the process you will know what to expect.

Hope that helps, and good luck!

    just to protect him legally.

Chris Hughes is based in the UK where the Hypnotism Act 1952 requires that people being hypnotised for entertainment purposes must be over the age of 18. He is avoiding legal problems.

People under the age of 18 can be hypnotised and are for therapeutic purposes, but the techniques used may differ for younger ages.

I’ve attached a link to the Act. (Originally the limit was 21, but that was reduced when the age for becoming adult in the UK became 18.)
